Upgrade

In the words of Neo - “woah, upgrades“.

I previously posted about my thoughts on upgrading something if it isn’t broken. However, yesterday when I checked my server’s control panel, I spotted that my disc usage was wayyy higher than I expected. After checking the disk usage, I realised my blog was up to 200mb in size, whereas previously it had barely been a few meg.

Further investigation showed some odd files, each 11mb in size, splashed around the wordpress install. Someone had been attempting to mess-up my blog!

Whereas my philosophy before was “if it aint broke, don’t fix it”, but now that some school-boy hacker had started to mess with it, I decided to upgrade in order to get the latest secure version.

So here it is - Wordpress 2.0.2 to all of you, it looks identical to before, but to me it looks nice and fresh from the inside (admin area):

OK, it’s a bit slower than before, but it does the job just as well.

Hemswell Market

Being a bank-holiday weekend I decided to go out not once, but twice! Friday evening, we went to the glass house, then onto the shed (which has changed a lot since Uni days). Saturday we met up with Si and Rachel to go out again. Due to Simon not having many clothes, it took us a good few hours to get ready.

Amongst the booze consumed, we got talking about Hemswell Market - a myth, a dream…

Sunday morning, we decided to get up early, pick up the other two and head out to Hemswell in search for this market. From stories and google searches we realised that there could be bargains to be had - especially when it came to disc-based goods.

Our directions led us to a straight road that went directly through the centre of Hemswell. As soon as we joined the road, we got caught in a slow moving queue. This must be it.

The official website states that copied/counterfeit goods are not allowed in the market. Having read this the night before, my hopes of finding cheap games had disappeared. However, no sooner had we parked and started walking through the huge 800+ stall market, the dodgy stalls started appearing. We were in heaven, almost.

Every row of stalls must have had at least one selling copied DVDs and Games. It seemed as though there must have been one guy running the lot, as there were similarities between each - the same metal cases with the cds/dvds within, the same sleeves and cases… a huge pirate business showing off.

The funniest bit was all the ‘geezers’ running the stalls, most of which were chavs in their late teens, or weird-looking types wearing sunglasses to hide their identities and their spots.

After trawling through most of the stalls, we decided to head home. Though I did manage to pick up a few bargains:

100cds for £11.50, along with 8 PC games - Battlefield 2; Crashday; SW Battlefront 2; CoD 2; GRAW; Toca 2; Serious Sam 2; NFS - Most Wanted. Thanks to Adamskii’s Demozone, which made the choices a lot easier.

I decided to leave the DVDs alone, as I didn’t know what quality they’d be. And afterall, purchasing copied goods is illegal. But when the games were 4 for a tenner, you can’t say no.
