AOEII
I know I’ve mentioned several current generation games, that all require pretty high spec hardware to run them smoothly… but last night I spent a few hours on Age of Empires II, playing it on the LAN against Anneka.
If you’ve seen it before, you’ll know that compared to today’s standards, AOEII is fairly primitive. However, it’s not all down to the graphics, as the gameplay is very good still and kept me entertained for far longer than Call of Duty 2 or Ghost Recon have so far.
It probably runs at a billion frames per second too, even on the 2.6GHz Celeron.
What I really need now though, is more games like it - old school, that will run on pretty much every PC and that work well in a LAN environment, so that hopefully in September all 4 of us can compete. Counter-Strike and the likes are out of the question, as they’re too fast and demanding in terms of hardware and player. I’m thinking Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds and Red Alert 2 should suffice - anyone know of any more, preferably non-RTS as I’ve got them covered…

Beginner’s luck - we’ll see who wins in a re-match!
As for playing online, I’ve only tried it once with Dawn of War - and as you say, the little p000ntang-zorz kid attacked within the first 5 minutes. RTS’ are all about building up a decent base and a huge army, to battle it out on no-man’s land.
